Exploration Well Drilled and Completed

exploration drilling, drill rig, Taroom Trough,

Project Overview

A Queensland operator required the drilling of an approximately 2,800 m measured depth exploration step-out well as part of its exploration work program appraising the Tinowon Formation as part of the broader Taroom Trough geological unit. JJM personnel were engaged to design, tender and deliver the well in compliance with applicable state codes of practice. The scope included development of a comprehensive basis of design, procurement of drilling and completion services, and management of the well delivery through to initial completion and testing.

Project Details

Scope of Work

  • Development of the well basis of design and drilling program

  • Engineering specification of well architecture and casing design

  • Selection and specification of premium production casing suitable for anticipated fracture stimulation and production load conditions

  • Preparation and management of tender processes for drilling, completion and associated services

  • Procurement of materials and well construction equipment

  • Supervision and coordination of drilling operations and well delivery

  • Collection and verification of exploration data sets required to evaluate the step-out location

  • Planning and execution of a follow-on completion and well testing campaign

  • Design, procurement and installation of a tubing conveyed perforating (TCP) production packer completion system

Key Challenges

  • Designing a well architecture capable of supporting future hydraulic fracture stimulation and production conditions

  • Ensuring compliance with state regulatory codes of practice throughout well design and operations

  • Coordinating procurement and delivery of specialised casing and completion equipment within project timelines

Outcome

The exploration well was successfully drilled and delivered in accordance with the approved design and regulatory requirements. All planned exploration data sets were acquired and the well objectives were achieved. The subsequent completion and testing campaign was executed using an underbalanced TCP production packer system, enabling the well to be safely evaluated and brought online. The project was delivered incident free, on schedule and within budget.
