Well decommissioning, plug and abandonment

WELL DECOMMISSIONING

We have been at the forefront of field and well decommissioning operations in Australia

Our team have extensive experience in field and well decommissioning activities in both conventional and unconventional well stock.

Most recently (2025) our team has successfully completed the execution of a 144 well field decommissioning campaign of both vertical fracture stimulated wells and horizontal multilateral wells. The campaign has included extensive section milling, well barrier remediation works, technology trials and efficiency improvements. Our team also completed wellhead cut and cap activities, gathering line purging and decommissioning, surface lands restoration and rehabilitation, statutory reporting and title relinquishment work flows.

We provide ‘closure liability assessments’ (CLA’s), well abandonment programs, project management of well abandonment programs and field decommissioning, regulatory submissions, contractor tendering, and wellsite supervision services.

Our hands on experience has resulted in a detailed understanding of well and field decommissioning statutory obligations and cost efficiencies. Whether a clients scope is for a one well plug and abandonment program or a larger campaign involving full field decommissioning workflows or multi well programs our team is extensively aware of cost efficiencies and new technologies including surface casing vent flow (SCVF) diagnosis and repairs (paper link)

JJM offers flexible field and well decommissioning contracting approaches as either an imbedded service or as a turnkey lump sum delivery.

What ever the scope, whether it is big or small, we aspire to be a trusted partner of choice in well and field decommissioning works.

Closure Liability Assessments (CLA’s)

One of our core offerings is are CLA’s for onshore well/field decommissioning cost estimation, which provides a comprehensive review of an operator’s well portfolio to determine the cost and associated liabilities of well abandonment.

These assessments ensure that operators are fully informed about the financial, operational, and regulatory commitments required for well decommissioning, rehabilitation and relinquishment. This then enables better planning, budgeting, and compliance with evolving environmental and regulatory requirements.

Many CSG upstream operators manage large well inventories, with varying designs, ages, well completions and regulatory requirements as per their regional Code of Practice.

At JJM, we bring deep domain knowledge, proprietary methodologies, and tools to review entire well inventories efficiently and accurately. Our approach not only accelerates the liability assessment process but also increases its accuracy and transparency while ensuring the CLA process. Our team can perform *AACE Class 5 through to Class 1 cost estimates. By combining engineering expertise with intelligent data analysis, we help clients make informed decisions, reduce risk exposure, and plan effectively for long-term asset retirement obligations.

Inactive well, suspended well and reclamation project management services

JJM can also manage your inactive wells to make recommendations including reviewing wells completion status, additional work required to ensure regulatory compliance and if required develop abandonment programs to ensure your company compliance with the CoP for inactive wells.

JJM has extensive experience in the project management of surface reclamation operations once the abandonment has been completed.
